Bowed Tendon

A year ago I looked out the window one afternoon to see Caramel in the lean-to, bobbing his head.  I knew immediately something was up.  I ran down to the barn and sure enough, he couldn’t move.  Over an hour of anxiously waiting for the vet brought a fast diagnosis–bowed tendon. Just the thought of a bowed tendon sends chills

Lucy Floating #12

Teeth Floating

Earlier this month we had the vet out for the horses’ annual spring check up.  Along with the usual shots and coggins, we also had their teeth floated.  We had never had any of our horses’ teeth floated before so this was a first time experience.  Thankfully our vet was patient with our learning and even took the extra time

Right versus Left

Since I’m constantly writing about horsenalities, I thought I’d give you a first-hand example of the differences between right and left brained horses. For demonstration purposes, I set an empty chicken food bag in an area the horses would have to encounter as I let them out of their stalls one morning.  Then, with camera in hand, I continued on

Friends at the Fence

Horsenality has kind of become an obsession of mine lately.  It’s so eye opening when you can understand how your particular horse’s brain works and why things make them tick.  It’s almost addictive.  So any chance I get to analyze horsenalities, I gladly take.  That’s what happened one day while watching the horses at the fence line. As mentioned in

Rudolph, Santa, and his Elves!

We don't celebrate halloween at our house but yesterday I convinced Zach to dress up the horses with me for the Horse Channel Halloween Costume Contest (vote for us here).  A couple weeks ago I was trying to come up with an idea for this contest.  Ideally I wanted something that was a "duo" but all the ones I found

How do you like my hat?

I very sorry in my lack of posts lately.  With only a few days left in summer, instead of a long and detailed post, I thought I would share some pictures.   Animals, especially horses, sure have a way of infusing joy into everyday life.  Caramel must have thought I needed a laugh.  Here is how he greeted me the

Freedom to Choose

Ask anybody who has been around Caramel lately, he is different.  It's not his looks that has changed, it's his personality (or horsenality).  He came to us as a sweet older gentleman that was always looking to please and never offered any talk back.  His downfall was that he was the classic right-brained introvert giving him the tendency to react

Nuclear Reaction

Lucy is the herd leader here.  She can boss Caramel around like nobody's business.  In the beginning this created some conflict between the two of them.  Lucy had high expectations for Caramel.  She wanted Caramel to move immediately and move with impulsion.  Caramel, being a very methodical horse, didn't have that kind of response and certainly didn't learn what she

Spoiled Horses

Our horses are quite spoiled.  Different horse friends of mine will tell stories about their horses that make me cringe.  One told me their horses don’t have water at night.  They knew it wasn’t ideal but still were okay with it.  Another feeds at 4:30 in the afternoon and doesn’t come out till 9:30 the next morning.  Obviously their horses
